Many people from other areas look to the Maryville/Blount County area as a place to retire. Most are looking to escape the harsh
winters in the north or the over-development in Florida, but we actually have people coming from all over the country. I have recently
sold lots to several couples who won't be building until they retire 2-5 years from now. Most people end up settling here after
vacationing here on several occasions.
Although listed numerous times in various publications as a top 10 retirement destination, Maryville is by no means a sleepy little
retirement town. Activities of many kinds are available in our area. Maryville and Alcoa have one of the largest and most elaborate
greenway systems in the country. It's well maintained paved trails follow Pistol Creek through a system of beautiful parks, through
both Maryville and Alcoa. Many newcomers look for homes near the greenway for easy access to the system.
Close proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Cades Cove makes a trip to the mountains a regular excursion for
many local residents. Townsend offers various festivals and events on a regular basis.
Maryville has grown to the point where you can find just about everything you need here. But, on the rare occasions you can't,
Knoxville is a short distance away. I140 and Hwy 129 can take you to most areas in Knoxville in less than 30 minutes.
What about the weather? East Tennessee has 4 distinct, beautiful seasons. The winters are mild compared to northern winters.
Snowfall is minimal. Spring is beautiful with an abundance of color everywhere. Summer can be hot, but generally during July and
August. The fall colors draw people from all parts of the country.
